I am a Mechanical Engineer with experience in the design and analysis of steel structures. A recent job change is placing demands for concrete knowledge on me that I don't have at the moment. I am looking for a good reference(s) as a "jumping off point" to learn more about concrete design. Any help would be appreciated.

Reinforced Concrete
A Fundamental Approach
Edward G. Nawy
Prentice-Hall

There's also a
Prestressed Concrete one, everything else equal.

Both nice books to have if not -maybe- for the most orderly minds.

Concrete Design: Nilsson (the old standby that is in the 17th or so edition!)
Concrete Materials: Neville

Reinforced Concrete Design by Wang & Salmon has been around for several years and most editions that I've seen explain or reference many of the ACI codes in the derivations of the equations.

Beware of Nawy's Book. Although it has many flowcharts that maybe pay for the book, it is plagued with errors. He also insists on using weird units like 6,000,000 lb-in instead kip-ft. Nawy is a good book for students but Salmon is more Pro.

Hope this helps

I recommend the Nihlson book. It's in the 13th edition and is the best I've found thus far.

I found a book at the IIT store the other day - I think that it would be one not to be without.

Mark Fintel: Handbook of Concrete Engineering 2nd Ed; ISBN:81-239-0843-1. The version I have is an Indian version. But original published by Van Nostrand. Perhaps there is a later version - just no over here yet.

A excellent resource for concrete knowledge is available from your local portland cement manufacturer. Typically this is a free service available to users of portland cement. Given that ready mixed concrete and/or precast concrete contains high volumes of portland cement, this service is there for the asking. Also, if you are in Canada or the United States, look to the Portland Cement Association or the Canadian Portland Cement Association. They both have structural PE's waiting for your call.

An excellent resource I found with the help of a post on this site a while ago is the ACI publication "Essential Requirements for Reinforced Concrete Buildings" available through their website (search for it at The book basically walks you through all the design criteria and ACI 318 formulae for buildings "of limited size and height" - up to five stories tall, 10,000ft^2 per floor.

A very useful resource, but of course not to substitute for consultation with (and the supervision of) a more experienced engineer.
