Has anyone found a good practise for measuring air gaps between stator and rotor of large generating units?

If you are a little more specific you may get an answer.
How large is your machine? Horizontal, vertical, high speed or low speed, hydro, steam turbine, gas turbine, diesel, etc?

Thanks for the reply. Vertical-hydro 80MW/120RPM generating units. I'm currently using a system composed getting the gap measurements with snap gauges and a micrometer. I just don't trust the realiability and accuracy of it. Too much human error involved. I've been doing some research on dynamic air gap monitoring systems. Just wondering if there is a better method of taking static readings. Thanks.

I use a feeler gauge and a vernier for small & medium machines. For large machines (>16 mm air gap), slip gauge+feeler gauge and a vernier.
