1. What would be the consequence if the generator exciter field connections were crossed (terminals F+ and F-) I'm sure i have the connections the right way round.

2. I have a 600V NEBB generator with a residual voltage of only 15V. After exciting the generator and setting up the Basler DECS 200 AVR, the generator was stopped. The residual voltage has now decayed to around 10V - Any ideas why this has happened.

That is about the only thing that will happen on a lot of generators if the field connections are reversed. The Automatic Voltage Regulator will start to work on the residual voltage, but its output will tend to cancel the residual field instead of reinforcing it. That's probably why your residual dropped to 10 volts. Reverse the field connections and the machine will probably build up normal voltage.
