Good afternoon,

I was reading an article in Chemical Engineering magazine that talked about how to calculate the optimum diameter for a pipe, and it talked about a "Generaux Equation." I was not able to find information on the equation or about the factors. Anyone have information?

Regards,

Lij

In the article "Updated Rules for Pipe Sizing" (1998), the parameter M of the Generaux equation: M=(a'+b')*E*P/(17.9*K*Y) is equal to 0.065 (as a'+b'=0.4, E=0.5, P=150, K=0.07 and Y=365) and not 0.575 as written in the article. It shall affect the results in some proportion...

Thanks Mr BigInch Mr Shelko.

I got the article published on january 2010. But I still have question about the factors.

Ok. I did nor know a new article had been published. However, i believe you can find what you need in the reference section of the article. No?

Thank you all for your answers.

My questions are basically on how the factors was estimated (eg "a": annual depreciation on the pipeline, "Le'":factor for friction in fitting), if the equation can be used for any pumping system (centrifugal pumps, rotative pumps, etc), what are the restrictions?

Moreover, i have a question about the validity of the equation, because in the article there is a reference to the Chemical Engineer's Handbook, but in the version I have it does not appear. That makes me think that maybe today ít is no longer applicable.

Yes they do change. A lot of the factors change with the economic climate and should be re-evaluated every couple of years or so. It is possible that they change between worldwide project locations and include specific country's microeconomics too. You should evaluate each economic factor in regards to your company using your specific cost dat for power and material costs and other investment criteria.
