Geostationary internet and cell phone reception

Way out of my expertise. The two way lag to geosynch orbit is 700 ms. When my satellite internet is on and the phone is connected to the wireless, reception is signifcantly better than when the internet is off. But 700 ms would be useless for voice calls. Any ideas?

I might be mistaken, but I thought satellite Internet was download only. Up load or signals from you go via land line or mobile signal. Maybe your satellite system used a different network or has a better aerial?

Or you are actually using a low earth orbit satellite?

Need a few more details of make and model of your satellite system.
 
No landline and virtually no cellphone, that is I have to stand in one corner of the kitchen to be able to talk on the phone, unless the internet is on. I do have a cellphone dish on the roof and a repeater but it is not currently used

Cell phone doing WiFi calling?

Once, working in Portland Oregon, had project in Fairbanks Alaska. On every call to Fairbanks it was immediately obvious if the phone company had routed it via land line or via satellite.
 
That's what puzzles me, 700ms latency would be immediately obvious in voice calls. Yes the phone is connected to the house internet.
 
What does it say your latency time is, or ping speed? Is that the 630 to 700?

It seems Ipstar is better than others in that it doesn't do much in the satellite and basically just reflects back. So maybe 700mS isn't too bad and it's when it gets to 1500 you really notice it?
 
Yes, the 630 756 622 are various ping times. lag to GEO and back is 476 ms
