I am looking for a database that can be used to manage geotechnical lab data (everything from moisture content to direct shear to triaxial results). We have a large mine site that will eventually have a very large data set, and would like to implement something that allows searching based on soil unit, borehole, XYZ coordinate, etc.

Does anyone know of or have any experience with anything comercially available that could accomplish this?

Thanks!

couldn't microsoft access do something like that?

Yes. I am just looking for other options (if there are any).

We are running QEST LIM system. It is an ISO compliant Database. Give them a try.

Hey DGuy4587 –
I have written a custom MS Office application that does Geotech lab data. It is tailored to my company's needs but we have recently started offering it - doing consulting with other Testing/Geo companies and have implemented several custom databases for a very fair rate. We have had great success with it and are looking into setting up a website with the app.

If you are interested in a webex type session I can show you some sample databases. It is truly a unique app and there seems to be a market for it.
If you are interested- call me or email me.

It depends on whch country you operate in. In the UK we have adopted the AGS form of data transfer of geotechnical information, which includes all the lab data. There are a number of software providers that produce specific geotechnical and LIMS progrmas that can provide this. Globally this would be GINT, and more specifically in different countries there are other providers. I am based in the UK, and we use Keynetix software for our Geotechnical Engineers and Laboratories. For the Engineers they use a combination of Holebase [basic geotechnical package] and Keyhole [more complex version of holebase] The labs are UKAS accredited for a wide range of construction materials testing, not just geotechnical, and they use Keylab whcih can cope with multiple sites/clients/samples/tests quite easily and is based around microsft excel. If you can do it in excel - you can do it in Keylab. This can in-put and export data in AGS fromat, and all labs use the same software - universal reporting. There is an international version of AGS in its final stages, which has had a significant input from the states, can't remember its name but its uses a different form of IT jiggery pockery.

Having worked in many geotek labs, I have found that Geosystems has a very comprehinsisve program. You may get the Labpack or purchase the sepedrate tests that you need.

I am a geotechnical engineer in Canada and I have partnered with my wife (she is software developer) to develop a web based geotechnical database system. With the above system - the user does not need to install any software and only requires a web-browser (such as Explorer, Firefox etc) to login to the server and access all the geotechnical information stored at a central location (server). The user can save all the field and laboratory information and is capable of all the searches you have mentioned and more - project, borehole, sample, XYZ coordinate, etc. The system can also plot the borehole logs including geology, sampling locations, survey co-ordinates, laboratory testing results etc.

If you are interested in the above system you can contact me at - h.panesar@usask.ca

Thanks,
HSP
