I have heard of girth and pulley that
was use in old hand equipment. The
girth was a leather strap that moved the
pulley that moved the carriage in a hand
press. Maybe the pulley had teeth in it
that rolled in a rack. Interesting question!

The drier was fired by hot air generated by a kiln which ran above the drier. Unit is _girth/pinion driven_ and lifter bars and still in the shell. Gears on the _girth & pinion_ are fairly worn.
_Girth/pinion driven_, no drive shaft, unit is pulley driven from the motor to the pinion. White metal bearings, trommel discharge, shell is rivited and ±15mm thick on average, mill is complete with the pedistals and bearings _Girth and pinion gears_ are in a very good condition.
All three grades provide lubrication for mining equipment including: _girth and pinion gears_ on rod and ball mills; rack and pinion gears on shovel dipsticks; and swing and pinion gears on top of the lower frame of shovels and draglines, which are sometimes served with an automatic lubrication system.

I think you are right in that it probably
means carrier or surrounding gear or
an internal gear and drive pinion. Girth
can mean waist or surround from the dictionary.
It was actually the dictionary that used
girth and pulley. Webster Dictionary I believe.

Girth gear is a term used for equipment such as rotary kilns and ball mills. Yes it is typically a large diameter gear mounted onto the shell or end of the kin or mill, and is driven by a pinion, or in larger applications two pinions. For instance, I visit one site where they have several 15,000 HP 34 foot diameter mills with a 7,500 HP pinion on each side. The pinion is sometimes direct driven with a slow speed motor, avoiding the need for a speed reducer.
There is no direct translation of this term into Russian. You have to use words: Ring gear of large diameter

Rotary Kiln Girth Gear
The manufacture of large diameter/ large module girth gears through the conventional methods is not only time consuming but also require large gear cutting machines. The girth gear of rotary kiln is of 6384 mm OD having 56 module and 112 teeth. It was impossible to manufacture this through the conventional methods of gear cutting. TGS arrived at a noble idea of cutting teeth using face mill cutter on a horizontal boring machine. The teeth of the above girth gear were made in 3-4 passes using straight-sided face milling cutter after roughing out the teeth. Since, the diameter of the girth gear was large, the deviations of the involute profile from the straight-sided basic rack profile were minimal and hence a close approximation could be made. The time taken for the teeth cutting was nearly one-third of the time taken generally through the conventional method. The girth gear was put in operation and is working very satisfactorily with good teeth contact.
