Air-insulated High Voltage Substations are available for up to 170 kV rated voltage. They are suited both for indoor and outdoor applications. The AIS Switchgear is more compact and of higher reliability than regular outdoor switchgear .But, as there are a lot of live parts in this, AIS required isolation by height or fence or enclosure. GIS may be rated higher as 800 KV and no live part is exposed. In high polluted atmosphere the only choice is GIS indoor located. GIS is low weight and high reliability. The braking currents are up to 80 KA.
Vacuum circuit breaker is excellent but is still for medium voltage purpose [up to 40 KV] and of course you need also a lot of other elements as CT, PT, Surge Arresters, disconnectors and so on. All this has to be enclosed. Briefly ,each one has its recommended application.
Best Regards
