Good afternoon,

Whether we can install the Attemperator (with spray water arrangement) in the vertical pipe instead of horizontal pipe?

Is there any advantage/Disadvantages in using in Horizontal compared to vertical?

Kind Regards,

R. Ilanseran ....

More information please ...

1) Are you purchasing a complete new steam attemperator from a respected equipment vendor or are you relocating existing unit ? .... Was this an old attemporator in dis-use for many years ?

2) Are you "trying to make your own" homemade attemperator/desuperheater ?

3) What did the vendor of the original unit tell you when you called them ?

4) Can you post drawings of your attemperator and piping configuration ?

5) Will your proposed vertical piping flowstream be up or down ?

6) Temperatures and pressures ???

7) As you know, attemperators/desuperheaters are notorious for causing severe "cracking" in downstream piping. In modern power plants downstream piping is often upgraded to a higher chrome molly material . Are you planning and such upgrade ?

Hello Mr.MJ Cronin,

thanks for your valuable time in considering my above issue.

below are the details you required,

This is the Attemperator which we are using in between two Super heater Headers in S Steam generation power plant.

Design Pressure-135 Kg/cm2
Design Temperature -500 Deg celcius

MOC: SA335P22
Attemperator size: 250DN Xsch140

These are proprietary items. The manufacturer can answer your question best. But I have come across such in the vertical position and those are working for quite a long time.

I cannot make out the distances involved, but you may wish to give consideration to placing the desuperheater as close to the usage point as possible so as to avoid significant deviation from design supply pressure and temperature downstream of it.

Desuperheaters downstream injection point they are installed, be in the horizontal, be it in the vertical position, are usualy sbmitted to great corrosion erosion, so you have to tanke this into account.
