Good text editor for Nastran Deck? 1

Appreciate, if some one recomends good text editors (freeware) for Nastran deck. I had one good flexible text editor, that highlights all nastran keywords and wors well with huge text files. But I forget the name now. If any one has one, please recommed me.

Much easier is ultradit-32 but it charge some money.

UltraEdit. Works great on large files; very fast. Very good copy/cut/paste - can even select a block of text (columns x rows) rather than whole rows. Well worth the cost.

You could try Notepad++. It's free and I can give you file with Nastran highlighting scheme for it. It works well.

Download cygwin (free), then you can use Nedit. Cygwin is great for many other reasons too... Recommend it.

crimson editor, and editpad, are both free stable and powerful text teditors for windows, crimson editor being my preferred one. winmerge or csdiff are good for doing diffs on decks, winmerge is prettier, csdiff will create a machine readable differences file.

I use PFE (Programmer's File Editor), it is very simple and intuitive to use. You can use create and run macros very easily. The disadvantage is the absense of a color scheme, or the capability of select columns... this make me sometimes use the crimson ... but indeed I always have used the PFE... I recommend both of FREEWARE programs!

Hi Mario, I have done a syntax highlighting starting from the ultraedit syntax file. I believe there is no copyright on the syntax file and we can use for other text editor. If I'm wrong, please remove the post!

if tried your highlighting scheme, but in my case it doesn't work with the current version of notepad++ (it always breaks down).
@Mario: Is it working for you?

I'm searching for a scheme which is able to highlight every 8 columns of the .bdf file, so that you can easily read through the bulk entries. It's really was really enoying the first time with the windows editor.

Hi Paul,

I'm using the current 5.6.8 version of notpad++. There you can usally go on "setup" ("Einstellungen" in the german version), then click "import" and "themes". There you select the file. Afterwards you load this theme in "setup" -> "style".
But I've to admitt it doesn't work in my case. If anyone did manage to use the style-scheme....

I've read a lot of your interesting posts on VPD community.
In my computer the XML file is in the installation directory of notepad++ : C:\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++. (OS XP X64)
To keep the file in that location, during the installation you should check the box with the following text: "Don’t use %APPDATA%"

Isn't there someone having the same problem that you can't see to which field the entries belong to?

You could set one vertical line to check a field length.
to do this go under Configuration>Preferences>Editing>Vertical edge setting
Check the box for Show vertical edge
set a number multiplier of 8

Thank you Onda! Another method I thought about is to let Patran write the .bdf-file with entries sorted by comma:

CQUAD4,15342149,87967217,15443913,15443879,15443880,15443914, 0.

Nastran would except that. But I didn't find an option yet...
