How do I know what the nominal thickness to be used for preheating of joints type branch connection. Type FIG. 328.5.4D - Sketches(1) (3) and (5).

Read Requirements in 330.1.1. "the thickness intended is that of the thicker component measured at the joint".
In sketches 3 & 5 you have to check three welds individually.
