Has anyone heard of the US govt. giving companies financial kickbacks for using aluminum alloys made from recycled aluminum (via a remelt process) rather than using prime aluminum direct from a smelter? This was brought up in a meeting this morning, but no one had any solid information to pass on. Let me know if there's any info sources out there...

I worked two summers as a student for an aluminum foundry a couple of years back, and we were using all the metal that was recycled in house. Besides that, we were buying our ingots from Europe. This was an american company based in Canada, but Sister companies based in the States were doing the same. I somehow have a hard time believing that, but these days you never know...

COKA, we did the same when I worked in die casting, but in extrusion we buy our aluminum either prime or remelt from other places (our company has smelters and remelt plants). The idea was to be able to give our customers an incentive to use the recycled material by getting them a price break. Seems like a nice idea, but I have no proof of its existence so far...

id say it make common sense to use recycled aluminium where possible its generally cheaper, if not totally purer.

to give you an insight i used to produce aluminium alloys in Scotland. our customer based went as far as atlanta alloy A380.1, japan, germany, switzerland and most of europe. With haulage and taxes in germany it was cheaper from them to buy it from us, transport it across europe and enter gernmany ant nearest point to the company rather than buy internally

One this that was costly for secondary aluminium producers was the landfill tax for dispoing of slag. This ulimately shut us.

Id say you would be able to get some sort of rebate on environmental tax, but not sure.
