Grain size E112 vs thickness

Hello,

my client requires for all my forgings in my pressure vessel that I'm building to be tested acc. to E112 to determine Average grain size according to E112.

My client has a specification which limits grain size dimension according to "thickness" of material (e.g. 5 or finer for thk<30mm, etc....).

For a Welding neck flange, what thickness should I consider? Thickness of welding end? Or thickness of the flange? Or Thickness/4 (as per governing thk of ASME)?

Construction code: ASME VIII Div.1, MAT. SS304

Thank you

Not that it helps you, but just curious if E112 has finally gone to allowing the use of chemistry to show 'fine grain'?
We have revised all of the AMS aerospace standards to allow this, since all that you are looking at is 'prior austenite grain size' there is no reason to require actual measurement.

SA 20 Par.8 refers to E112 but this standard doesn't mention "thickness" (let me know if otherwise).

I'm trying to find a reference in ASME VIII Div.I, even if "grain size" is not considered...one suggestion is using thickness according to PWHT UW-40, so if it's a butt joint weld, the thickness to consider it's the depth of groove, if I understand correctly...

Any other ideas? Thank you
