I am designing a conv. store. We need to pump the sewage. We need 20 gpm at 30' of head. Due to low flows we need to use a 2" pipe which dictates the use of a grinder pump station. Preliminary cost estimate for a pre-packaged Flyght system is around 25K. Do I have any alternatives? this seems to be high for a convenience store.

That does sound high for what would be domestic sewage.

I cannot speak for what you have to do outside but if I was designing for the inside sewer, 25K is high.

For a duplex system that handles normal sewage flows, I would not expect to pay more than about $5K for the system.

I typically use Zoeller prepackaged pump systems.

Try them.

I agree with PEDARRIN2. This project is probably too small for a product from Flyght. Flyght usually supplies much larger pumps.

A pump salesman has suggested a STEP type system. Septic tank to catch solids with effluent pump in a pump tank. Owner likes this idea since he is a short term owner and will not have to pay tank pump out costs.

Myers or Zoeller are good alternatives. Myers might not be quite equal to Zoeller, but in a duplex system with such a low demand, either would probably last quite a while. I have also successfully used Ebara pumps, but I'm not sure if they're even around any more.

In regards to the "STEP type system". The Step type system will be more expensive on initial costs than just installing a grinder pump.

The local building department would have to approve the installation of the setp system as well.

initial pricing on grinder station - 12000. This was also confirmed with another company.

Step system - around 6000

You're right, the flygt is too big for this application and I light Flygt pumps.

The Myers is a good system (used many of them); however, make sure you use a 2hp motor. There are a lot of 1hp units and they look fine for the pump curve; but, they tend to burn out early due to the grinding needs. The 2hp units have a little more power for the grinding application.

Why do you need a duplex unit? Use a simplex and purchase a spare pump.

I just personally purchased a simplex station for our church with a Myers pump, guide rail installation, all of the wetwell piping, valves, controls, and 8'x30" fiberglass wetwell for $3,500. That doesn't include power to the panel, wiring between the panel and pump, or inlet/discharge piping; but, your above prices are way out of line for even that if it is close to your building.

A "quality" step system will use the same setup only a pump without the grinders so the cost will be similar except you also have a septic tank and routine sludge removal. You can get the cheap step systems with a submersible well pump; but, I think you will regret it once you begin replacing the pumps.
