Groove around cylinder but not on plane

Newbie here.

Tried relentlessly yesterday to make a groove at an angle around a cylinder like the extruded in the attachment. I can see where the contact point of a ball end groove will need to change as it orbits around the cylinder. I'm just playing with this to see if it can be done.

Is the question how to model it so that the cutter can remain perpendicular to the cylinder axis?

If so, maybe something like this would work (NX6 file).

Exactly what I was looking for. I will try recreating that on my own and see how it turns out. I will post my result.

Thanks for the advice. I was not aware you could subtract after a feature had been added. I just subtracted from my original model, worked like a charm.
