Groups of nails - how many nails / how close is OK?

I can't find anything in the NDS addressing a bunch of nails into the side of a 2x. I'm trying to figure out how many nails I can reliably fit in a certain area. Is there some rule of thumb for spacing and row spacing? Can I make a grid @1"? 1.5" 2" 2" with staggered rows @ 1.5"?

I suppose the answer is "not so many the wood splits". But that's like asking how much load I can put on a joist and answering with "not so much it fails". I can't note: "Contractor to figure out if they can fit 12 nails. If splitting occurs, contact engineer to re-design connection".

I think a good point of reference is shear wall nailing patterns.

2" o.c. is fine, but should still be staggered so they don't fall in the same grain line.
Then they require at least a 3x or (2) 2x if you have adjacent panels with 2" o.c. nailing.

So 2" staggered is pretty tight, and a 1.5" stud is too slim to fit two rows in...

Seems like a pattern of about 2" x 2" but still staggering along the grain lines ought to be pretty reliable.

And those can be pretty sizable nails... 0.148" dia.
Smaller nails could probably be closer.

Does Table C12.1.6.6 “Recommended Minimum Spacing for Nails” from the 2015 NDS answer your question?

It might if I knew where to find it. There doesn't seem to be such a table in the NDS. The "C" makes me think it's a commentary, but the NDS download has no commentary and I can't seem to find one. Does one exist?

So there IS a commentary! I wonder why it isn't mentioned on the AWC site under 2015 wood design package.
I also wonder why they are charging $150 for the PDF download. I downloaded 2015 and 2018 a couple years ago and there was no charge.

Found the whole commentary here:
