A few years back, I came across a design example of the connection of a guard post to steel C Section stair stringer. It showed a method of determining the allowable 'width' support you could use for the moment resistance. It's a bit of a long shot, but is anyone familiar with determining the effective width of the Channel web? I did an SMath program for it, but cannot locate it.

Thanks, Dik

I found the SMath program sketch file, but cannot locate the program. It's the beff dimension I'm looking for.

Thanks... that's where I got it; I didn't know where it came from. I put the reference in the SMath program (which I couldn't locate), not in the CAD file. Again thanks so much.

If your post is close to a corner, it lowers your capacity considerably.

Thanks....

Yeah, the strength is the pits when the post is near the end of the channel. Crossing my fingers -- so far on my projects there has typically been a plate that could serve as a stiffener or I could add a stiffener.

Yup... do the same; I should have added the note. Thanks. I don't know for sure, but I suspect the end posts will likely get loaded the most.
