Hi all,

I have been assigned the task of preparing a Technical memo sizing basis for flare for onshore for a new greenfield project producing methanol.

Any advice or recommendations on how to approach this task would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Best regards,
Amanda

You need a venting and relief study to determine the maximum relief load. For methanol it's probably a fire relief case.

Your process designers should be giving you this information. M

Some cases will set the max permissible thermal radiation loads. Some other cases will also need to be considered which involve accidental / unintended loss of flame at the flare.

As a start you can look at API 521 which gives basis for design of relief systems including how to estimate relief rates. If you are just preparing a sizing basis of design for others to do the actual sizing later than you can use API 521 as a guide. Although API 521 provides guidance for sizing, a hazop is typically performed where the project process and mechanical engineers get together and decide upon what are the valid relief scenarios in so far as what relief valves could possibly be relieving at the same time to come up with a design flowrate for the flare system.

Here is an old API 521 attached but you should purchase the latest edition.

I found an old flare study from a project I worked on which may help you attached. I will look and see if I have any more references in my files.
