Do speed + direction sensors for back-biased / gear-tooth applications, such as Honeywell SNG-Q Series, use two separate hall IC's?

I cannot find any single hall IC's for back-biased applications which provide speed + direction detection with quadrature output, other than the Allegro ATS605, but I doubt all speed senor manufacturers can be using this sensor.

As far as I am aware, direction measurement always requires 2 sensors placed out of phase. Direction is calculated by detecting which sensor rises first (i.e. low to high), since this will be dependent on the direction of rotation. You could place 2 sensors at different locations, so that when 1 sees a tooth the other sees a gap. This would provide you with the 2 sensor outputs required for calculating direction. Have you looked at some of the GMR speed sensors like those from infineon?
