Hi all,

I am trying to do a harmonic analysis in ANSYS by applying only displacement to a certain area on the model (please see the attachement). The sonotrode is held with a bolt in the red area. In order to simplify the model we did not model it, you can think the exciter is glued to the red area and makes +- 5e10-6 movement in 60000 hz. The rest of the body has no constraints and it moves freely.

The aim is to see the displacement amplification on the tip of the sonotrode in 60kHz. My question is:Is it valid to define just one boundary condition on the specified area (+- 5e10-6)? Should I be constraining my model by any other means? The reason why I ask this is I ve made a search and could not see any example likely.

Thanks

I'd say yes, the displacement boundary condition (presumably a harmonic time function) should be sufficient, provided the z-axis and y-axis displacements for that surface are given a similar fixed displacement (i.e. set to zero). You probably need to provide a slip boundary condition at the cut plane for your half model (i.e. set displacements for z-axis to zero across the cut face).
