Hi all,

I'm a firm believer that my time on Eng-tips has been beneficial to myself and the work i do currently. I've actively engaged and posted questions which i never would've found the answer to through traditional means and discussions whilst stumbling upon posts that have sparked my interest in topics i never would have thought of. I can say in some instances i've gained more from Eng-tips than i have from any formal education I've received. I'm sure there's many of you that would agree

What i want to know is if anyone has ever put their experience on Eng-tips on their resume?
If so where did you fit it in and how did you present it? Did your employer bring it up during an interview? Do the majority of engineers even know about Eng-tips?

Would love to hear from some of you guys who've done this

I'm going to provide the hard truth here from a hiring perspective. If I saw someone put anything related to Eng-Tips on their resume, I would immediately lookup the person and see what their comments/posts were. Based on my experience here, I am not sure it would be beneficial to many applicants, as I have seen far more questions lacking quality or reason on these forums than what I consider "real questions". Now, I wouldn't hold this against a person by any means, but it would cause me to dig deeper and the results may not always be in someone's favor.

The possible outcomes:
1. Look up the posts, see easy/less engaging questions or questionable responses: this leads to thinking either they have no idea what they are doing or they didn't get proper training at previous employment.
2. Look up the posts, see engaging questions/responses: this is the ideal outcome as it shows they can think for themselves, are capable of critical thinking, understand projects and are willing to train others.

It is not the people asking questions here that would consider putting it on their resume. It would be the ones answering questions.

Regardless, if they referenced ET, FB, LI, etc., I would check, and for some people, the totality of their posts would actually be much more revealing than a 1 hr interview, particularly about their temperament and thought processes, or lack thereof, especially insofar as how they would interact with coworkers. Interviews are first dates; everyone is on their best behavior, no farts, no nose picking, etc.

I've had occasion to work with people who had stellar resumes, and even stellar references; one turned out to be worse than a college grad, and the other turned out to like 3-hr lunches. The former had great references because they were dying to get rid of them, the latter was actually great at what they were doing, when they were doing it, but obviously had other issues.

It is as Compositepro says. Although good questions might count in horse shoes and hand grenades, only those that answer questions have the chips to buy in on this play. Obviously prospective candidates for employment should be pretty confident with the quality of their work they have posted online, or demonstrated anywhere for that matter, before hanging one's hat on such reputations. If you are, again obviously, you hope that a prospective employer does their due diligence and throughly investigates any item you might have included on your CV. Positive proof of value.

Reality used to affect the way we thought. Now we somehow believe that what we think affects reality.

I've never used it on my resume but it has gone into my Chartership (UK) application. Which I still need to submit.

I've not been specific about it other than use it as an example of participating in professional development and the promotion of mechanical engineering.
