Hatching something strange with annotations

I am working with Autocad 2009 annotative dimensioning and mleaders and it really is the bees knees. Except when it comes to hatching.

Not really sure why these three things might be related but when I move the grips on an annotative dimension or alter the text in an mleader the hatching behind the annotations wont update properly.

There are unfilled gaps in between annotations where hatching should be.

And when I try to delete hatching the selection grabs the annotation as well as neighbouring lines that the hatching crosses, even if I am careful only to pick the hatching.

Any suggestions or remedies would be most appreciated

Regarding the selection question, you may be able to affect that by changing the PICKSTYLE setting. (Set to "0" to allow selection of parts).
