Hazardous Area

Hi there,

So far as i know definitions for classified areas have been defined by north americans as class I div I,II,... as opposed to Zone 0,1,.. of Europeans.

Anybody has heard anything like "Class I zone 0" which it seems to me a combination of both?

Any reference would be appreciated.

This is the US adaptation of the IEC Zone system. It is defined in Art 505 of the US National Electrical Code.

Start with Google. Search for "Zone 1 hazardous area" and surf from there. You'll learn about Zone 0, 1 and 2 and much more.

To summarize the approximate equivalents:
Class 1, Div 1 = Zone 1
Class 1, Div 2 = Zone 2

Zone 0 is special. Only required for a constantly present hazard (like inside a fuel tank). It's included in Div 1 in the North American system.
