Heat effects on reinforced concrete

The steel making process requires reinforced concrete walls and floors of structures to be in close proximity and exposure to extreme high temperatures. Based upon observations at numerous facilities, these temperatures combined with a wet environment cause spalls, exposing the reinforcing steel. Corrosion soon follows, but is generally not extreme. Maintenance of damaged deteriorated spalled areas can only be made during planned shutdowns.

The spray chamber near the caster is an example of a structure that often experiences problems that I suspect are primarily due to extreme prolonged heat exposure. The structure is generally a tower say 20 feet square and say 60 feet tall. Thermal expansion is not likely the source of problem.

What can be done to protect the concrete wall surfaces exposed to these severe conditions? I've considered increased depth of reinforcing steel in the walls. Is a coating on the face of the wall a possible solution? Perhaps an expendable heat shield would help?

Are you using concrete that is formulated for high temp use?
Perhaps facing it with refractory brick would work.
We used special concrete on foundry floors and in some areas used brick inlay.

Did you add heat-resistant concrete facing or construct the structure of a special heat-resistant material?
