Hi guys,

In my project, I need to figure out which heat exchanger to be used in a process based on heat transfer coefficient. I have been told to simulate the process in HYSYS using different types of heat exchangers (e.g. shell & tube, plate heat exchangers, double pipe, etc.) to find out which one is the best to be used in the process and draw a plot of heat transfer coefficients obtained Vs. delta T! Would you please help in this and give me any link to any instruction references or anything that might come in handy in my case?

Hi,

1. You can refer "Fundamentals of Heat Exchanger Design" by RK Shah & DP Sekulic. This book is very handy for HE design and it also illustrates different types of HE.

2. I am unclear of how you will select the type of heat exchanger based on the HTC? To select the type of HE various factors like fluid type, fouling, flow rates, corrosiveness, cleanability etc.. will be important.

 
Thanks rmw, the point is I am looking for an instruction to learn how to simulate the process in hysys using different types of heat exchangers cause it will take a lot of time for me to read through hundreds of pages of books to find out the mechanisms governing heat exchangers. Besides the calculations are time consuming too.
 
Thanks rakuday, it is not just based on HTC. As you mentioned those other parameters will be considered in choosing the appropriate type of HE but for now, the objective is to have a comparison between heat transfer coefficients while using different types of heat exchangers in the process. I am just looking for a reference to learn how to simulate heat exchangers in HYSYS since I am not familiar enough with this software.

Do you want to understand heat exchangers or HYSYS? In my opinion, your best investment of time and effort is in reading the books. Unless you gain a working knowledge of heat exchangers, you will not be able to provide intelligent input into HYSYS that correctly models the exchanger in terms of its physical construction, geometry, style etc. etc. etc. which have significant impacts on its performance in a given application. I'm not a HYSYS guy (never even turned the program on!), but from what I have seen from the people who work with me and for me, you can't model an exchanger effectively in HYSYS without knowing actually even a little more than just the basics of heat exchangers.

in hysys (process simulator), you can only use one type of heat exchanger (tubular); you can't try different types of heat exhangers. based on the input data, it will calculate the heat exchanger duty. it's possible to design the heat exchanger in hysys, but a more rigurous calculation is done in the dedicated modules for heat exchangers design (Aspen tasc/htsf, HTRI); the physical properties of the streams in hysys can be exported and used in this programs. designing a tubular heat exchanger is not a big challange, but regarding the plate heat exchangers, air coolers, spiral and others it might be a difficult and risky work, since the heat transfer cofficient strongly depends on the geometry of heat exchanger and material used which are specific to each manufacturer.
best and simplest way is to provide the process data to some vendors, and they'll provide you the best heat exhanger for that service (cost, maintenance, etc) and they'll also guarantee its functionabillity.
