Theoretically a U-tube exchanger can support any even number of tube passes, but sometimes it can be difficult to weld the required pass partition plates into the channel head for small exchangers with several tube passes.

For a 2-pass U-tube exchanger the U-bends typically wrap around the horizontal centerline, but for 4 or more passes the U-bends must wrap around the vertical centerline.
