Heat exchanger

Dear people

we have a tube in tube heat exchanger, it is blocked with solids. we have a slurry 10% solids going through one side and the other side is also 10% solids.
the solids size is around 100 mesh. these heat exchangers are blocked really bad.

if some one is involves in such kind of work before, please post your comments.

I am not familiar with a tube in tube exchanger. By any chance do you mean a pipe in pipe (double pipe) heat exhanger or a Brown Fintube type (if other than shell & tube type)?

What kinds of slurries are involved?

On a lighter note, you might have inadvertently stumbled across a rather effective filter design.

Dear Snorgy,

the word tube in tube is a double pipe heat exchanger its just a common term we use when we talk to the maintainance people. anyway we have wood flour like powdered wood about 100 mesh,
we are pumping this one into a high pressure reactor, this heat exchanger is a recovery heat exchanger, accidentally we ha a power cut and the exchanger is blocked.

thats the application and cause of the block,

Sometimes electrically powered pumps in critical uses are spared with steam-turbine moved units.

Ask for a Shutdown & follow like either

a) Rod Cleaning
b) Hydroblasting
c) Chemical Cleaning

A variety of cleaning procedures are available.

During initial phase of my career, I was in a operating plant. I did remember that after power cut, the slurry handling lines & equipments will be purged/flushed with suitable media. This is a good eng practice.

Not sure this would work or the expense, but there is an automatic ball cleaning system usually used for condensers in power plants. Link below.

I wouldn't recommend ball cleaning systems for slurry solutions.
