Does anyone know of a Consultant or Firm that has expertise in calculating heat transfer and/or temperature profiles of a complex "fin"? Specifically, this application involves steel beams that penetrate a building's insulation envelope and are welded to structural steel. Preferably someone located in the Northwest USA or Alaska and someone experienced in Arctic Engineering or techniques.

Thank you.

The "complex fin" are support columns that penetrate the building's roof insulation and are welded to the building's support steel. The Architect (and I) would like to get an idea of the temperature profile along the column and beam that the column sits on (and is welded to).

Russmech,

We have developed a computer program, called HADCRT, for analysis of multi-compartment buildings, and we are currently using the program at the DOE Hanford site in Washington State for HVAC, hazards, and fire safety analysis. An integral part of the computer program is the calculation of temperature profiles in the building materials. HADCRT is capable of providing the transient and steady state temperature profiles you described. In addition, we spend 50% of our time in the Northwest at the Hanford site, so we should be accessible to you.

Finally, HADCRT has been developed under our quality assurance program which includes an extensive validation process and we are currently involved in an international building fire benchmarking effort co-sponsored by the U.S. NIST.

Thank you.
