Hello,

I need some helps on the following :

For a cylindrical vessel designed to ASME VIII, Div 1, with design pressure of atmospheric ( 0 Kgf/cm2 ).

To determine the hydrostatic pressure test, as per UG 99(b) note 34 = Test factor X Design Press X Stress ratio
= 1.3 X 0.0 X 1
= 0.0 KgF/Cm2
Therefore the hydrostatic test pressure would be full of liquid.

Please share some light if the above is correct or other comments, if any.

Best Regards,

Didi

Why on earth is it designed to ASME VIII?

This sounds like an atmospheric tank but containing only air??

If it's full of liquid then it should have a design pressure equal to head of liquid at least.

Makes no sense - please elaborate.

The scope of any code is one of the important items to read.

Hi All,

It is C.S cylindrical vessel to collect oily water from storage tank. The vessel is equipped with two vent nozzles so it is an atmospheric vessel. The hydrotest pressure will be full of liquid. Any other information that you need.

As already suggested above, this vessel is out of the scope of ASME VIII. If you are required to design it per Div.1 rules, then you could proceed as follows:
1)Design the vessel with the thicknesses you believe to be sound; it will certainly sustain the weight of liquid
2)Determine the MAWP (UG-98) corresponding to your design
3)Perform a MAWP based hydrotest.
Your client should be very happy with that.

Or you could just decide to treat it like an atmospheric tank like API 650, where for a similar tank (tank with tight roof) you fill it right to the top with water plus 2 inches.

If you think the vessel could ever fill up including the height of the vent nozzles then test it to a water height at least equal to the height of the "vent nozzles" above the top of the tank

The final nameplate must make it very clear that the design pressure is zero kgf/cm2

As noted it must have cost several times what it should have done, but you sometimes can't argue with a client that wants to spend money.
