Help to create a wire grid

Hi

I have used patran a reasonable amount at University but now want to use Abaqus (as I hear it is much better) for my project. I am doing the project on the fatigue of 2D lattices so I want to model a very basic wire mesh i.e. a 5x5 grid of wires with symmx and symmy constraints to represent the entire mesh. I then want to apply a load as if I was stretching the mesh vertically. The point in the model is to be able work out the stress in each wire, at first they would obviously all have the same stress but if I were to remove the central wire and more (creating a void in the middle of the mesh) the stresses in each wire would vary.

I have tried with limited success to build this model but I am unsure of the following:

- do I create it as a 3D deformable solid or a 2d planar deformable wire? or other....
- I know how to create a material and assign it to a beam but I when I try to assign a material to the wires the bit next to section (when you create a section assignment) is blank despite having created a 'section'
- I can't see how to create a set of nodes to apply the symmetry BCs, the only way I can see how to do it is make about 10 BCs, 5 SYMMY and 5 SYMMX applying each of these to each relevant outer node.

I'm sure I am probably just lacking in experience in Abaqus and this model should not be that hard to create but I'm currently struggling so would really appreciate any responses.
