hi people...i write on this forum because autocad has somehow to do to what i need, but acutally the software about i am is Rhino 3.

so i have this model made with rhino 3, quite complex, big building. i have to do the vertical develop drawings and sections, so whats better than using the "make 2d drawing" command, that projects the 3d objects into a 2d drawing...

usually it works, so i save the lines as a .dxf file and then import them to autocad. but somehow, rhino refuse to make the operation, i mean that it "thinks" for a while processing the command and after i have no results.

pleeeeease or my boss will dance on my grave

Most people here won't open a thread titled "Help" regardless of how many exclamation points you put after it.

Why don't you red flag your post and ask management to put a decent title on it? You'll get more traffic.

Print this out to follow it. This will help you with RHINO & ACAD.

You happen to got lucky this day. I am probably one of the FEW people with fairly extensive RHINO-3 experience on this site. RHINO-3 is a VERY useful tool, but it has some limitations. It is NOT as mature as AutoCAD in some really important ways. But it WILL do SO much, that it remains a great 2nd tool to use along with ACAD. MAKE-2D is the right approach. All you need is some help with a few details.

Here goes-

"PURGE" your RHINO drawing of all possible unused layers and blocks. This will make a HUGE difference !

First, arrange your model such that you can control visibility of groups (not GROUPS) of objects by LAYER and not by HIDE/SHOW. HIDE/SHOW extreemely useful but for this to work, you MUST organize by layers.

Once your model is FULLY organized-

Think about and DECIDE how you want the various SECTIONS of your model to go across to ACAD. Lets say by Elevation and by floor level. It could be by utility. RHINO does an EXCELLENT job routing wiring and plumbing, etc, but that's for another discussion. Organize your info by layer.

Turn off all layers EXCEPT something you're ready to bring across- maybe floor-1 for instance. (turning everything else off by layers reduces calculation time !) SET A CONSTRUCTION PLANE PARALLEL TO THAT something. It could be a floorplan layer for the 1st floor, whatever. Put that CONSTRUCTION PLANE (RHINO's "UCS" ) NEAR and PARALLEL to but NOT right at what you're wanting to export to ACAD. Use MAKE2D , and choose the option to project to the CURRENT construction plane. (This gives you control over where your projections go.) Let RHINO do its calculations, and make the 2D lines to export. Put the 2D results on a layer by itself and SAVE the model file.

Step-2 of 3 :

FILE-EXPORT selected WITH ORIGIN. Export the new lines to ANOTHER seperate RHINO file. Minimize the 1st RHINO (DON'T close it or reload in it to the exported file you just created) OPEN the exported RHINO 2D lines in ANOTHER session of RHINO. In the new RHINO file of the 2D lines, pick a base point, and move the lines as a group to 0,0,0 . SAVE the result as an ACAD DWG. I like selecting ACAD R-12 as my option, as the exported entities come across as simple entities, not some of the more complicated flavors in later versions of ACAD. The ZERO-ZERO-ZERO step is important for ease of bringing stuff together in ACAD.

Step-3-
Open ACAD. Open the drawing you want the floor to come in to. Use ACAD's INSERT command to bring in the export file you created. Bring it in as a block for easy moving into position. Move it into position for floor-3. Get satisfied it came in ok, and its near where you think you'll want it to be. Save the work, and Minimize this session of ACAD- you'll be coming back to it.

Return to step one above, and repeat the process of making a RHINO Construction Plane (RHINO UCS) PARALLEL to what you want to bring across next, but a little away from it. Turn ON the layers of JUST what you want to bring over next, and turn all other layers OFF. Use MAKE2D again and continue the process until you have everything across into the ACAD 2D drawing.

This process works with any version of ACAD on the receiving end whether FULL ACAD or ACAD-LT.

Finally-
The real key is to combine LAYERS and CONSTRUCTION PLANES in a meaningful way to get your RHINO 2D lines easy to bring across, and to keep RHINO's calculation load as small as possible.

I couldn't include every possible detail here, but the essential stuff is here. This will work so well that I actually do this multiple times EVERY SINGLE DAY . I do RHINO models that are 200, sometimes 300Mb in size, and have NO PROBLEM at all doing this process. It works REALLY WELL in BOTH DIRECTIONS, too ! I do alot of my 2D layout work in ACAD and bring it across to RHINO. I REGULARLY use ACAD drawings in our archives to save me from re-creating layouts, and can move DIRECTLY to doing my modeling. I do detailed models of offshore oil platforms for engineering, planning and presentation purposes (all 3) and find RHINO a very useful tool ! Get your boss to spring for RHINO-4. You'll LOVE some of the real-time rendering that's available right inside the RHINO viewport ! I like it enough that I purchased my RHINO-4 myself when MY boss would not spring for an upgrade. I upped my $/hr rate, and when he couldn't find anyone to replace me with, he agreed. Yours might not, but this is a good example of how well ACAD and RHINO really DO get along !

but now theres a new problem with regen command on autocad, if someone can help me:

so, i had the 3d rhino model, i made the make2d command work, so i saved as a.dwg file and imported into a new file, using the messy but correct rhino2d draw as a base for my elevations.

PROBLEM: i used some difficult curve imported "as it was". i mean i just changed layer (all this in autocad) from the "base"layer to the "good draw" layer, because it was a pain to redo it. but after a while, the curves are simplified in choppy splines that cant get a minimal change with regen command. pratically, what once was rounded, now is polygonal and i cant solve it, unless redo aaaaall these curves (that is the thing i really DONT WANT to)

try the following command:

VIEWRES controls the appearance of circles, arcs, ellipses, and splines using short vectors. The greater the number of vectors, the smoother the appearance of the circle or arc. For example, if you create a very small circle and then zoom in, it might appear to be a polygon. Using VIEWRES to increase the zoom percentage and regenerate the drawing updates and smooths the circle's appearance. Decreasing the zoom percentage has the opposite effect.

I too have used Rhino and Acad together... and cursed them both because each lacks so much great stuff that the other has.

ahhhh another problem!
my model is so big that when i try to run Make2d, after a while of processing datas, it displays a msg saying "flamingo ran out of memory" :( what can i do???
