in the manufacturing of the pipe (sour) it is not required to test each coil or each heat number for the coil? API 5l

WHY????

iS IT ENOUGH TO TEST THE HEAT NUMBER ONLY??? i NEED SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THIS TEST hic

Replies continue below

Recommended for you

1.0 Usually the first and last pipe/plate of each heat is
HIC tested.

2.0 The orientation of the specimens is illustrated in
NACE-TM0284 however, I usually require one set of
specimens taken from the center of the plate/pipe for
both HIC & Mechanical Testing.

3.0 I stipulate that in the event of failure of the test
for the materials in any heat the entire lot from that
particular heat shall be rejected and retesting shall
not be permitted.

4.0 NACE-TM0284 does not outline acceptance criterion. I
usually outline the following:

4.1 Surface blistering is acceptable
4.2 Longitudinal Crack Thickness (LCT) shall not exceed
0.1mm
4.3 Transverse or stepwise Crack Thickness (TCT) shall
not exceed 0.1mm
4.4 Crack Length Ratio (CLR) shall not exceed 5% (average
of 3 sections)
4.5 Crack Thickness Ratio (CTR) shall not exceed 3%
(average of 3 sections)
4.6 Crack sensitivity Ratio (CSR) shall not exceed 1.5%
(average of 3 sections)

5.0 I usually require the use of Solution "A", although it
wouldnt be such a bad idea to consider using NACE-
TM0177 test solution :) and the following material
requirements:

5.X Maximum hardness value of 180 BHN

5.1 The welded pipes shall be to API 5L Gr.B for wall
thickness up to 1.25”.

5.2 Thickness above 1.25”, the welded pipes shall be
ordered to ASTM A672 Gr.C60

5.3 The maximum carbon equivalent shall be 0.38%
calculated on the basis of product analysis using the
formula contained in supplementary requirement S20.2
of SA20.

5.4 Maximum phosphorus content shall be 0.012% by product
analysis

5.5 Sulphur content shall be a maximum of 0.003% by
product analysis and shall be inclusion shape
controlled

5.6 Supplementary requirement S2.1 of SA 20 shall apply
to product analysis.

5.7 Supplementary requirement S21.1 of SA 20 shall apply
to trace elements. In addition, the maximum Calcium
content shall be 0.005% and the Ca/S ratio shall be
greater than or equal to 1.5 when S is greater than
0.0015%. Also, the Al : N ratio shall be greater than
or equal to 2 : 1.

5.8 Plates shall be ultrasonically tested to ISO 10124
with acceptance level B3. The examination shall be
continuous over 100% of the plate. In the event of
any recordable indications, the location of these
shall be traced through fabrication. Recordable
indications shall clear main seam of nozzle welds by
a minimum of 75 mm

P.S I dont see the need to HIC test seamless pipes if they
meet the material specification requirements.

Cheers,

I missed, fittings and weld consumables; let me know if you need any feedback on that

Dear PVRV:

what you wrote is more more than enough...i have question about taking sample from the center of the plate or pipe! whay do you required the center.

Also, if you do not mind, can you give me more about fittings and weld consumables?

thanks alot

1.
Segregation causes a variance in material properties and occurs during solidification. Areas most prone to Phosphorus and Sulfur impurities are usually at the center.

2. Fittings:

2.1
Steel used for pipes (seamless), fittings and flanges shall be fully killed, made to fine grain practice.

2.2
All fittings shall be ordered to seamless when available in the required size, irrespective of whether line piping is seamless or welded.

2.3
All materials shall be tested to evaluate the resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) as outlined above. (Previous Post)

2.4
All materials shall be Impact tested at 0oC with minimum value of 100J.

2.5
All materials shall conform to the requirements of NACE MR0175 with a maximum hardness value of 180 BHN.

2.6
Pipes shall be seamless to API 5L GrB or A333 Gr6 and shall also meet the following chemical composition:

C : 0.18% max
Mn : 1.35% max
S : 0.003% max
P : 0.012% max
Ni : 0.20% max
Ca : 0.005% max
Carbon Equivalent : 0.38 max (by long formula)

2.7
All API 5L pipes shall be to PSL-2 with colour identification SR-3.

2.8
All elbows, reducers, caps and other butt welding fittings in API 5L Gr.B or ASTM A672 lines shall be to ASME B 16.9 or B 16.28 with material specifications to ASTM A234 Gr. WPB and shall also meet the chemical composition as per item 2.13 . The forming temperature shall be reported.

2.9
All Butt weld tees and extruded outlet headers in API 5L Gr.B or ASTM A672 lines shall be to ASME B 16.9 with material specifications to ASTM A420 Gr. WPL6 and shall also meet the chemical composition as per item 2.13 . No weld repairs shall be carried out without prior approval.

2.10
All butt welding fittings in ASTM A333 lines shall be to ASME B 16.9 with material specifications to ASTM A420 Gr. WPL6 and shall also meet the chemical composition as per item 2.13 No weld repairs shall be carried out without prior approval.

2.11
Forged fittings and flanges in API 5L Gr.B or ASTM A672 lines shall be to ASTM A105 and shall also meet the chemical composition as per item 2.13 No weld repairs shall be carried out without prior approval.

2.12
Forged fittings and flanges in ASTM A333 lines shall be to ASTM A350-LF2 and shall also meet the chemical composition as per item 2.13 . No weld repairs shall be carried out without prior approval.

2.13
All fittings and flanges shall meet the following chemical composition requirements.

C : 0.20% max
Ni : 0.20% max
S : 0.003% max
P : 0.012% max
Ca : 0.005% max
Carbon Equivalent : 0.38 max (by long formula)

2.14
Mill test certificates for the materials shall report trace elements and the same shall meet the requirements of S21.1 of ASTM A20

2.15
Cold formed, locally heated fittings or fittings welded after forming shall be normalized after forming.

2.16
All welded fittings to ASTM A234 of thickness equal to or greater than 0.375” shall be ultrasonic tested (either plates or finished fittings) to ASTM A578 Level C.

2.17
All welds in welded fittings shall be 100% radiographed.

2.18
Tees with branch line size more than 25% of the main line size shall be barred. If bars as welded after heat treatment, the tees shall be PWHT (Post weld heat treated) and MPI shall be carried out on the attachment welds. Also The recorded hardness value shall not be less than the translated specified minimum Ultimate tensile stress.

Cheers,

Let me know if you require any further elboration.
