Dear group,
I have steel grade with following composition:
%c=0.13
%Mn=0.60
%Ni=4.9
%Ti=0.60
%Si=0.50
%Cr=21.0
%S=0.01

what is reason for adding Ti to this steel grade?
Best Regards

Based on the Cr/Ni contents, your stated composition looks more like a fit with a duplex stainless steel casting. Do you have the specification for this alloy? Deliberate additions of Ti can serve several functions in alloys, as a deoxidizer, or as a strengthener for precipitation hardening capability and/or stabilizer to form TiC instead of harmful chromium carbides.

Can you provide more information as to your use of this alloy?

Internal combustion engine exhaust valves sometimes are made with 21-4 steel.

Regards,

Cory
