Have received a mill certificate from a steel supplied for DN400 ASTM A333-6, DN40 XS.
The impact test results for a 10x10mm specimen at -45degC are 1) 298J, 2) 298J and 3) 298J.
This seems indefeasibly high. It also seems unfeasible that all 3 test results are identical in value.

I am querying the mill on the result.

Has anyone seen impact results this high for A333?

Yes, I have. But I have never seen the exact same results from a set of three specimens.

VERY suspicious. The probability of 3ea. identical results this unreasonably high is at least 1,000,000 to 1. Is this from China?

Yes from China. I am chasing up with the mill. Thanks for your feedback

It is possible that the 298J value is as high as the impact machine reads, so they just report the maximum value. I've seen that done by several labs.

You should redo the impact tests and most likely reject the material. I might add that you also recheck chemistry to verify fine grain melting practice.

When you buy price wise from China without verifying the mill practices and follow up with independent inspection, expect the worst.

Hi all,
Thanks for your responses. So i got an independent NATA accredited third party to repeat the testing. The exact same result was obtained for the three specimens. I rang the third party and they confirmed the specimens did not break on a 300J machine. The 298J reading was recorded as the specimens slightly deformed when struck.
CWeng, sounds like this is in line with what you are saying.

If you look I am guessing that this is material that was Ca treated and vacuum degassed, with S and P that are very low.
When this happens to us in testing we flag them with a note saying that test was out of range and in excess of XXX.
