High-Temp Electromechanical Solenoid

Hi all,

Looking for a solenoid with the following general characteristics:
  • Electrical actuation
  • Compact size - general dim. ~80x80x80mm
  • High Temp - ambient operating temp (air) >600 deg. C
  • Actuation travel - ~1.5mm
Any ideas/leads will be greatly appreciated.

We had a lot of remote actuated devices.
Some used solenoids and some used rotary actuators.

I designed a laser shutter that had a descending force spring. It took around a pound of force to start it opening, and then it dropped to a fraction of an ounce in the open position. I selected a motor to actuate it such that it required 10V to open, and 1V to hold open. Thus, I minimized power consumption, and the temperature of the device.

Maybe it is time to be clever.
 
It's the 600C op temp that's the differentiator; most commercial solenoids might go up to 250C
 
Getting a solenoid plunger (core) to operate reliably with 600C ambient is tricky, given that the curie temperature for iron is quite close to that temperature, and any additional heating beyond environment temperature pushes it over the hump into demagnetization territory.

For the solenoid coil windings, getting workable wire insulation is tricky at those temperatures.

Curie temp magnets in the 900c range do exist like Hiperco 50 $$$

Coppers conductors resistance at that temp is going to be up there.

no insulators other than ceramic that are going to handle it.

Thermal expansion will be nuts, so it will have to be pretty loose for moving parts.

Probably have to look at actively cooling the unit.
