What type of heat exchanger is typically used to cool down steam reformed natural gas (syn gas) products from the 800C range? What materials are used (i.e. superalloys: Inconel, Haynes, etc.) and problems usually encountered regarding thermally induced stresses.

Any references of specific tech books dealing with such an issue is welcomed.

If you can find someone in the ammonia industry, or some information about ammonia Hx's you can find the answer. If my old memory is not too faded, I think the 123C Hx was a boiler feedwater heater using syngas on the tube side. Dont quote me on this.

Here is a website of someone who knows.

The cases that I recall have use a series of Hxs. This limits the deltaT across each one and lets you choose materials that fir the particular conditions.
Often the worst corrosion is at the lower temps where some stuff starts to condense.

Corrosion, every where, all the time.
Manage it or it will manage you.
