The discussion is on Slashdot. The linked article is here on Network World. As much as I would like to see copper thieves getting zapped, this sounds scary.

Mythbusters debunked about peeing on the 3rd rail (the hot one) on a subway line. They never did one about peeing on an electric fence. I think many of us have or know someone who has had that unfotunate experience that peeing on an electric fence WILL cause a shock (the pee is still a stream and not broken up into droplets like the 3rd rail scenerio)

And the voltage is more along the lines of 50,000 - 100,000 volts - like a car distributor - Guaranteed to knock you on your a$$...

Aren't the outside rails isolated in a subway? If so, you'd have to be standing on the return rail while peeing on the 3rd rail. Might have to do some strength training on the old bladder to hit that one.

Best to you,

Goober Dave

@Miketheengineer

50kV-100kV is pretty high? Lots of places electric powered trains runs on quite low V DC (e.g. 1.5-3 KV DC) - but in my country its 25kV AC for the long distance trains but only 1.5 kV DC for local metro service around Copenhagen. An electric fence of the shelf in my local store would be up to 10kV. Just did one more google:

NY subway uses 625V DC

The comment about 50kv was in regards to electric fences, not railways.

It would appear that the railway industry will be getting some help in the copper theft problem soon.
