Historical Chicago Building Codes

Does anyone have a reference for where I can find the historical building codes for the City of Chicago? I am doing a project where I need to reference several of the historical codes. I have looked online for PDF's of these codes but with no luck. I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction - ideally to PDFs. Thanks!

I’ll bet the Chicago Bldg. Dept. would have some history and info. on this matter, and maybe a little something to say about it. Your local Ref. Library might have copies of those codes, a Chicago Ref. Library probably would. I suspect they all even have phones. Why is it that with the advent of the internet, Google and E-Tips, we never go directly to the source for the answers any longer?

dhengr: Thanks for the response. I should have provided a bit more information. I have actually contacted the city by phone (several times) and they were not the able to provide much information about the older building codes. Maybe answering the phones gets delegated to the people with the least experience - who knows. I may have to keep calling back until I reach someone that was around back then and knows the answers.

The only drawback with this site is that you can't download the entire book - it's one page at a time - unless you're associated with the University of Michigan.

I'd call "Soil Testing Services", a firm there with extensive experience in Chicago.

Soil Testing Services (aka STS Consultants) no longer exists--we are now AECOM. You could try calling the Chicago Office, but with all of the mergers that happened to create AECOM, I don't know if historical codes can still be found.
