"During Grand Joint Exercise No. 4, Saratoga and Lexington were able to launch an airstrike against Pearl Harbor on Sunday, 7 February 1932, without being detected."

note the date and the target !

Re sub commanders with periscope shots of a/c carriers.

In an exercise there is no point in keeping the sub away from the targets, since that would mean the sub spends its whole time doing what it usually does, keeping away from the screen. So at least once in every exercise the sub gets close enough for a shot. Every press release that crows about how sub XYZ beat the USN in an exercise is careful to avoid mentioning that.

The problem was not with the Avenger torpedo aircraft, but the unreliability of the torpedo themselves (fuses), of which many of them triggered and exploded the torpedo as they struck the water immediately after launch.

you must get smarter than the software you're using.
