Hi,

Please advise if Horizontal Activated Carbon Filter has equal performance compared to Vertical ones. We have high flow rate in the range of 900 m3/hr of Seawater. Feed SW has free chlorine and organics as well

Please highlight if this is technically possible Pros and cons, past exp and reference plants, if any

regards
NM

If the system is designed appropriately for horizontal mounting it should make no difference in terms of performance of the activated carbon.

However to remove free chlorine from that amount of water with activated carbon, is certainly possible but is going to be very expensive. Likewise the organics will probably also consume some carbon capacity.

You probably need to explain more about the process why you need to remove the free chlorine and organics and what else you have the process train.
However it sounds like you have a seawwater RO with organic fouling issues and you are going to treat the raw water with chlorine. Is this correct?

Than You Ash

You are right. It is part of pre-treatment for SWRO and feed seawater is chlorinated and pre-filtered with media filters
Down the line micron cartridge filters are present.

Do you know any suppliers who design such Horizontal systems? Or Any reference installation with higher flow rates?
My point is the contact time should be maintained for the carbon bed and flux is not important as Media filter.
In horizontal filter is there any possibility of channeling or other issues?

I assume that you are referring to a horizontal pressure type filter filled with granular activated carbon?

Last time i looked at one of these it was actually still a down flow filter , just with a shallow bed and a large surface area.

The problem with your application is that you may need to replace the GAC regularly and that may be awkward.

The performance of horizontal filters is equivalent to that of vertical filters.

Horizontal filters are used when higher flow systems are necessary, not necessarily for filter equipment with higher flux rates.

Carbon filters have a very large capacity for removal of chlorine, but may have a very limited capacity for removal of soluble organics.

There are a number of firms that supply horizontal filters. Suez. Evoqua, Westech. Dow Water. Veolia. GE Water.
