Hot water flow from open pipe end

Hi

What's a good reference for working out the flow of hot water from an open ended pipe. The upstream pressure means the flow is critical and hot water will flash to two phase at the discharge.

Thinking of dividing the line into segments and working out pressure drops and the flash point. Iteration required.

Thanks K

Thanks all for your input and doing the calculations.

500 to 1000 t/h is a lot of flow and thrust force at the end of the line. Even if an open drain and 26 bar line pressure is an unlikely case, the plant owner ready needs to address the design of the restraints on the drain line.

So there is no better way to prevent someone leaving a drain open and starting a system with to to 26 bar superheated water???

This must be a serious safety issue to resolve, not stopping the pipe bending. IMHO.

Hi,
Agree about the safety concern. It's not uncommon to see people break line. George has given you a masterpiece of advice. You should consider performing an Hazop of the entire plant, you may have other similar issues.

The safety concern of existing situation is real. The plant is one human error away from the consequences. How often does the plant owner actually NEED to drain this vessel?

Good Luck,
