How can I delete excess blocks from the insert list in my drawing?

I use a particular drawing as a template to begin all my drawings and over time I've accummulated quite a few outdated and unnecessary user-defined blocks. The drop-down list in my INSERT dialog box has become packed with these old blocks and weeding through all of them really slows me down. I haven't been able to figure out a way to delete these. Is it even possible? If not, is there a more efficient way to keep a short list of common blocks on hand? Thanks, Clark

The answer is to use the purge command located in the menus at: File->Drawing Utilities->Purge. Or just type PURGE at the command prompt. But, before you do......

As with all commands, you need to understand the operation of the PURGE command before you use it. Please read up on the command in your AutoCAD book or in the help file before you use it.

Purge can remove all unused blocks, layers, etc. so follow the prompts (pre 2000) or use the dialog box carefully. MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR DWG FILE BEFORE YOU EXECUTE THE PURGE COMMAND.

What you probably want to do is use the purge command only on blocks with the "confirm each item to be purged" active. This will prompt you with each unreferenced block's name and give you a yes or no prompt to remove the item.

Hope this helps.

Smeagol is correct. but there are a couple of other things you may want to remember about the purge command. turn all of your layers on. Purge will not remove blocks that are layers that are frozen or off (hopefully you created all of your blocks on layer "0"). The othere thing is it usually takes about three attempts to remove all of the blocks you want gone.

Thanks alot guys! You really helped me out.
