I would like a plot where you can see the original and deformed shape in one plot:

If I have 10 steps, is there a quick way to see at which step I get the most deformation besides having to manually click through all the steps?

Check the "Plot Contours on both shapes" and "Allow Multiple Plot States" options.

For the second question, you can use Tools —> Field Output —> Create From Frames and select the "Find the maximum value over all frames" operation.

Please don’t delete your posts when you get the answer, these posts may be useful for other users looking for the same thing in the future. Also, we have a separate forum for questions related to Abaqus, it would be best if you could switch to it:

In the "Add Frames" window that will appear when this button is pressed, you can click "Select All" to add all the frames easily.

would that over plot all the different shapes ? into one mess ? I'd've thought you could extract an envelop (of max deflection) at each point, and plot this with the undeflected shape ??

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?

This tool is in fact a form of envelope. It creates a single frame in which each material point has results being maximum value over the searched frames. An additional output variable is also created to indicate the frame from which the result was taken.
