How can you prevent the failure of roads due to roots? 3

I need some suggestion in proposing a solution for failure of roads due to roots growing into the subgrade from the adjacent trees. The roots tend to cause cracks on the surface of the roads and these roads need to be fixed assuring no further problems.

Cut the trees down if they are in the R.O.W. continue cutting trees that might grow back from the existing root system.

Also, work with city/county zoning board to disallow trees close enough to the road to damage the pavement. It also depends on how big of trees you're dealing with.

While possible, it is unlikely that tree roots will damage a street pavement. A sidewalk or driveway, yes, but not a street pavement. If roots are indead the problem, then your pavement section is too thin regardless of the trees.

if trees are that close to the road to cause damage, they should be moved back for safety. you may have a drainage problem as the pavement should shed water thus making it a poor location for tree roots to survive. maybe you have a leaking sewer or storm drain which is causing the root intrusion.

Don't cut or move the tree just yet. Consult an arborist or an experienced landscape arch. S/he may have some ideas, like trimming the roots in vicinity to your work. There is a percentage of the root area that can be cut without killing the tree. Roots rarely grow back if cut properly.

The Oregon Department of Transportation has a standard detail designed for "root barriers" that seems to be proven fairly effective (I have not seen a better method).

Basically, it's a 4' high 10 gauge steel panel that is place right near the curb line.

What do us Civil engineers need with trees, they just destroy all of our hard work
