How common is it to place control joints in masonry retaining walls.

My masonry retaining walls are 8" thick and 4' max retained height. The masonry walls are located in Hawaii. So no freeze thaw cycles. I usually place (2)-#4 horizontal bars in bond beams a max of 32" O.C. vertical.

It may be common in some areas, but will also depend on how much horizontal steel you have in bond beams. See NCMA TEK 10-3 for alternate design procedures for placement of CJs in heavily reinforced walls:

NCMA mentions in their TEK on foundation walls that CJs are not usually used.
