Thanks Mcgyvr.
I cant use step or iges.. these are creating too large of files (~19mb & 27mb)...

Really need to convert to .dgn please.

Do you want a solid or do you really just need the 2D layout drawing converted?

I have a 3D model of a pressure vessel in Inventor that i want to convert to DGN so that a piping designers can incorporate my model into their microstation model to allow them to 3D model pipe work. No 2D drawings are involved.

Do you have a lot of detail in there that they don't need?

Since you are using Inventor 2009 (three releases old) you do not have the Shrinkwrap tool that will automatically simplify the assembly. Instead you will have to open a new part, exit the sketch and then perform a Derive. Locate the assembly, and then start removing parts that the Microstation guys don't need to see. That will start reducing the overall file size once you do save it out as a Step file or DWG solids which will then be brought into the DGN format. Keep in mind all they really need to see is the extents and where the pipes should hook up to in your assembly. They really shouldn't care about anything else.

Also, realistically these days those files are not that large for 3D models. Download IZArc or Jzip and split the zip file (I assume you need it small to email) then send 5 emails. Or upload to or similar, I use it so send data sets to clients that are 100MB+. But a lot of large companies have their own ftp if you ask.
