i have a ryobi miter saw that is missing the switch, id like to fix it but i am used to dc only and dont know much about ac motors. there are 5 wires altogether: white and black (in from paoer cable) then black yellow and brown go down in the windings. i dont understand why there are three wires, its just a single speed motor.

Can you please provide more details of the motor. It may be capacitor wires.

motor has no capacitor, just a 120v 12a motor. and like i said its a miter saw so there should just be on and off, no multiple speed or reversing or anything like that. thanks

Hi braindrop

Your power cable has a BK and WT and should have a GREEN for ground.Your Yellow and Brown are your starting winding and the Black is the running winding.Another Run lead is hooked up internally? Should have.
In any case your Yelllow goes to the Power cord to the Neutral WT.the Brown wire connects to the Bk from the winding and the Bk from the power cord.
The lead arrangement is as follows.
YELLOW and BROWN ==Starting winding
With Cap the Yellow goes to the CAP and a PURPLE comes out to be hooked up to the Neutral (WH on Power cord)
If you had multiple speeds, the running winding could have in addition to a BK also a RED and a BLUE.
If rotation is wrong interchange Yellow and Brown.
Without looking at the motor and taking some measurements there is always a chance that wires could be wrong.

hey thanks alot for the info you guys, i appreciate it. will try it out first thing in the morning.

Hi brain drop.
I forgot your question was how to wire up your switch.

Your BK wire from the Power cord goes to one side of the switch .Another wire would connect from the other switch terminal to the BK and Brown from the Running winding.
This should work.
