Consider a grain silo resting on ground. Most references simply suggest some min seismic force to be applied at the centre of mass of the stored material, but I have no reference showing how longitudinal stresses in walls are calculated. Should I go on with beam section flexure formula?

API 650 Appendix E has details applicable to tanks storing fuel, and I noticed there that there is more than simple statics in determination of overturning moment.

Is there a similar standard for grain silos.

Thanks and nice weekend

This doesn't answer the question but perhaps it will get you in that direction....

Check out ASCE's Journal of Structural Engineering. This journal may be accessed from the website and you can search a large database.

Thanks Qshake for the input. You are right, there really is a giant database.

While you're out there looking, try the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute's(EERI) website and check out the database for the Journal: Earthquake Spectra. If that doesn't get you any help there is another database you can use at that site. I think it accesses University of Cal - Berkely.

Good Luck and let us know what you've found out!
