Recent important article about wind variability:

How will it be possible to construct a renewable electric generation grid with both daily and yearly swings in wind supply ?

Yes, a renewable system with battery back-up can address daily load swings .... but what about yearly or regionally wind supply swings ?

Doesn't this variability, in effect, MANDATE a fossil fueled backup system ?

Will this mean that a massive infrastructure of fossil/nuclear fueled generation must be available for swings in supply ?

... or will we all be waiting silently in our electric vehicles waiting for the wind to blow ?

.... or will the prancing renewable power MBA cheerleaders simply throw their hands up and say "Well,... that's something that the engineers will figure out !!"

Hmmmmmmmmmm ... Almost sounds like we need some kind of reliable non-renewable 24/7 back-up ????

.... and, IMHO, that back up should provide 20 - 30% of total system capacity ???!!!!!

No ???

Greg doesn't seem to have any wind turbines.

Or 20-30% storage. Pumped storage or whatever storage. Storage is storage. There is no renewable vs nonrenewable storage.

Don't restrict yourself to wind turbines. Subsea turbines do exist and provide a much constant supply of electricity.
They can be designed, manufactured and installed by the same community of industrials who have been working on subsea facilities over nearly 50 years.
Why is there no much momentum towards this transition is clearly political.

? Finding a solution is great ? Knowing how to implement it is fantastic ? Believing it is the only one and best is naive ?
