How do you attach a block to a specific place on a view? 1

I have blocks that I want to attach to a hole on a view, those blocks need to follow the view when I move it, they also need to stay exactly where I put them on the view. Any suggestions?

Therik:

Option 1: w/o a leader--
If you just need to place the block near the hole without pointing a leader line to the hole, just click inside the view and select insert from the pulldown menu, annotation, block. The block may not be placed exactly where you clicked, but it is attached to that view. Just move the block where you like it.

Option 2: w/ a leader--
If you want a leader line pointing to the hole, select the edge of the hole and then select insert from the pulldown menu, annotation, block. A leader will be attached to the point where you selected the edge. Make sure you get it right the first time because you can move the leader location. The actual block may be anywhere on the screen again, just move it to where you want to go. Again, the leader stays anchored to the same location as orginally selected and you can't adjust it.

FYI:
If you would open up the block file, you'll see that it is on a sheet of paper. When you click on a point in a drawing to insert a block, that becomes the lower left corner of the paper of the block file. Following me? So, if your block happens to be located in the upper right corner of a B size sheet of paper and you're inserting it into an A size drawing, then the block won't appear on your drawing and a fit view won't find it. You will have to manually "scroll" view out to see it. The block will be located the distance (about 17X11 in this example) away from the point that you selected to place the block.

To remedy this, shrink the paper size in the block file to just larger than your extents of your block. Move the block contents to the lower left corner of the paper and save. From then on, when you insert a block, it should appear very close to the location that you selected.

My problem is, we actually place a symbol on top of any dowels holes on a part. This symbol I created with a block. I want that block to become a part of that view and actually stick itself to that hole until I decide it no longer needs to be attached. What happens to me now is, I have to tweek my views around on the page because I'm using different configurations, then my views leave all these symbols behind. Big pain.

How do you open the block file?
There is no file type like "Open *.sldsym".

What version of SolidWorks are you running. SolidWorks 2001Plus has a dowel pin symbol included in the annotations area. BBJT CSWP

one thing to make sure of is that the view you are attaching the block to is "active" when you place the block. this is accomplished by right clicking the view window and selecting "activate view". if you do not do this, the sheet (or some other view)is active and the block will relate its position to whatever is active at the time you place it.

Linqur, to open a Block, you have to Insert>Annotations>Block... this should take you to your location for all of your .SLDSYM files. "Happy the Hare at morning for she is ignorant to the Hunter's waking thoughts."

Thanks MadMango but I was wondering how to see the sheet what is defined in symbol file according to therik's FYI section.

But I found finally: Tools->Block->Edit.
Then I get to open the block and see a huge paperspace but no way to edit it smaller ....

Right click your view and "lock view focus".
That should do what your after...

btw....don't forgot to unlock when done

My symbols do not have any views and this right click menu is unavailable. Should it have views? Insert empty view is not enabled either...

Right click on the view where you want the block to be inserted and select "lock view focus", then insert the block.
